Arctic ice and Antarctic ice have to be looked at together. Seasonally, as one melts, the other freezes. The biggest difference is Arctic ice is generated from the Arctic Ocean and its storms. Antarctic ice is also generated by an entire continent collecting snow. An increase in Antarctic sea ice may be because Antarctic land ice is melting then refreezing as it meets the sea. Even though Antarctic sea ice may be increasing, the total from both poles is decreasing.
