CEOs have received raises even as they laid off employees or limited their wages, and in some cases that’s why the executive officers were paid more. Whether it was to save the company, the rest of the jobs, or just to make more money the rest of us have ideas about how much the top salaries should be relative to the bottom wages. Few expect any correlation with the ideal, but even the estimates of reality grossly underestimate the actual CEO pay. The trend isn’t sustainable, just ask last century’s royal families.
