Zillow released a study documenting the fact that starter homes in the US now cost about one million dollars or more in 237 cities, up from 84 cities five years ago. The fact that starter homes cost $1M in 84 cities back then was bad enough, and has almost tripled in five years. The good news is that the typical starter home nationwide remains under $200K ($196,611), but that has risen, too. Almost all of the 237 cities are in large metropolitan areas in coastal states. Even with some optimism about trends for more affordable housing, $1M is a long way from affordable for most.
