This is another one of those binary moments. The only data is chronicling something that never happened to something that now has. An AI has flown a version of an F-16 (an X-62A) in a dogfight against a human. AIs have done so before and won, because they could maneuver in ways that would damage a human. Now, AIs can do so without exceeding human tolerances. That means the logic, the AI, can be incorporated into an plane with a pilot and take over if necessary, even in combat. The corollary is that without a human onboard the AI can be more successful. In either case, it encourages increasing the use of AI controlling combat aircraft.

According to DARPA, the X-62A team’s accomplishments would be viewed similarly to AlphaGo Zero’s impact on Chess, Shogi and Go, as a validation of autonomous aviation for both military and commercial applications.” – The Register
