It’s finally happened. Renewable energy sources now exceed fossil fuel energy in the UK, or at least the potential is there. With everything operating, the UK can generate 42Gigawatts from renewables, exceeding the fossil fuel potential of 40.6 Gigawatts. Within the last few years a variety of milestones were passed, including days when portions were primarily powered by renewable energy. One of the reasons this is significant is the UK’s role in the Industrial Revolution that was enabled by burning cheap and plentiful coal. Now, renewable energy systems are being installed while fossil fuel plants are being dismantled. If all goes as planned, coal will be phased out by 2025 meaning that within twenty years coal will have fallen from prominence to obsolescence. If it can happen there, where else can it happen?
