China’s great growth and great departure from its previous politics have also created great inequalities within the country. Strains are appearing, particularly amongst the not-so-wealthy who are trying to survive in the expensive cities. The hints are anecdotal, but if true, could mean an instability that extends beyond China. As China’s economy and politics go, ripples reach out across the globe. With so little visibility to the real situation, any change may seem abrupt from the outside, and the markets hate surprises.

Those factors have continued to worsen since then at an
accelerating rate, to the point where the economy is now largely driven by people trying to earn or steal enough money to leave.
