Governments know their economies need energy, so they subsidize and give tax breaks to fossil fuel and renewable energy companies. The policies make it harder for free market pressures to determine the most competitive. Fortunately, rather than embrace new policies to enable a shift to more sustainable solutions, cancelling subsidies and tax breaks may suffice. Simple, yet radical, and politically difficult – even when supported by the head of the World Bank.
