Fracking was never supposed to be a permanent solution, but oversupply and a drop in demand dropped the price of oil and dropped the profitability of drilling. The number of wells has dropped precipitously, even as supply continues to increase. The boom continues in many places, but in others the workers are leaving, towns are busting. They may reboom, though, if the supply drops or the price rises.
