California’s drought is epic; or, California is merely returning to a normal that wasn’t witnessed by Europeans. The current drought may extend for years, or not; but the norm was for a much drier climate. The fear is that a collapse in California’s water supply will also dry up one of the largest regional economies in the world. A study from a few years ago suggests that won’t be the case. The only way California doesn’t remain vibrant is if it continues to use water the way it has for the last few decades. Accepting some decrease in agriculture, a large decrease in lawns, and a much higher increase in reduction and reuse can keep California economically healthy – but different. Adaption is required, and is possible.
