Cyberattackers have two things going for them: they can launch millions of attacks for almost nothing, and count on humans being the weakest link in the defense.
“In 2013, the Department of Defense and some US states were receiving 10–20 million cyberattacks per day.”
Some attacks are sophisticated and technical reaching inside without bothering with pesky humans. Most attacks, however, rely on people operating out of habit, trust, or curiosity. We’re human. They exploit that. The threat will always persist, just like crime persists despite how far civilization has advanced. Maybe in a few generations we’ll mature, but until then the biggest threat and vulnerability is us.
