We’ve been missing out by working at less than the speed of light. The internet, and most telecommunications networks have a bottle neck; those pesky slow electrons. Sure, electricity flows at almost the speed of light; but, if electricity was fast enough there wouldn’t have been any demand for fiber optics cables in telecom. Fiber optics sped up the signals and increased the bandwidth; but that’s still not fast enough because of those pesky slow electrons. The hurdle happens at the electro-optic switch. Switching from electrons and electricity to photons and light back to electrons and electricity again slows the signal. One answer, instead of using something like wi-fi at the end, use the light itself to communicate directly with the computer. One switch removed, dramatic increases in speed and bandwidth. It may not work through walls, but that may be a good thing.
