There are few concepts more conventional than the idea that there are only two sexes. There have always been others, because genetics works that way, but until we learned about genetics the people who weren’t obviously male or obviously female were either told to hide their difference, ostracized, or eliminated. Religions labeled them abominations. After we were able to look at chromosomes we could tell that there was more than just xx and xy. Now, a new conventional idea is that there is more than one sex. That realization has been gaining public awareness for decades, but now it is finally changing official as forms begin to add boxes beyond M and F. The majority of millennials are already there.
