Marriage was the norm and the convention for centuries. Its ubiquity is falling. Only 52.6% of Americans are married. Changing gender roles, increased independence, decreased interest in raising families in an uncertain future, tougher economies, all encourage the trend. Among those that are getting married, the median age is increasing. Demographically, smaller families mean less spending, which impacts the economy unless immigration increases the population. If the current trend continues, being married will soon mean being in the minority.
