America sprouted cities throughout the deserts from water pulled from aquifers or diverted by dams. The cities are growing by the water supplies are not. People tend to react to crisis, not foresight, so if the cities outgrow their supply will they: limit growth retreat to sustainable levels; become expensive as they incorporate advanced technologies like desalination; enforce reduce, reuse, recycle; or implode as bubbles pop and people leave for higher-growth cities? The answer will be a mix, but it all means change to places like Las Vegas and Phoenix.
