The hack of Sony, whether accomplished by a nation or an unnamed group, may be the equivalent of the cyber world’s 9/11. The analogy to Pearl Harbor may be more appropriate, but World War II is fading as the years pass. The key is whether the attack spawns a systemic series of counter-attacks, hurriedly created defenses, and a knowledge that size is not protection enough – and can even prove a vulnerability. It was only a hack against a movie company. It was also a demonstration of how easily a multi-billion dollar organization can be devastated by a few determined and unconventional individuals.
